We invite gifted young artists to share their musical journeys, inspirations, and the unique stories behind their performances with local schools, organizations, and performing groups. Jazz Youth Artist Spotlight

Elijah Chamberlan

Jazz 93.5’s March Youth Artist Spotlight highlights Elijah Chamberlan, baritone saxophone player and junior at the Classical Academy High School. Elijah is a member of the CSYSA Ascent Big Band, TCA Crimson Jazz, N.A.M.E. Sax Quartet, the TCA Wind Ensemble.Join us in learning about how his passion for jazz and sax began.

What instruments do you play and how did you come to choose them?
I play baritone saxophone. I started playing it in 8^th grade after I played tenor and alto during 7^th and the end of sixth (so about 12). I came to the decision due to the amazing sound and genre you can produce with the range it plays in.

Who has been the most influential or inspirational in your musical training?
An artist I loved starting my career as a bari-player was Leo P. His performances teach baris how to truly use every part of their instrument and gain confidence in performance. I also really enjoyed his version of “Moanin’”.

How has your school/performing group helped you with your training and development?
Crimson Jazz has become a critical part of my development in theory and rhythm over the years (shoutout to James Knapp the drummer). When I joined Ascent Big Band (ABB) last year, I learned a lot through my peers in terms of soloing, which I found valuable. In ABB, I really enjoy how fast paced the group is, even in the crosshairs of tricky charts like Count Bubba’s Revenge.

What other hobbies or interests do you have outside of music?
Other than music, I like playing Ultimate Frisbee, talking about football, and watching it, and having Taco Tuesdays with friends.

What do you see yourself doing in the future?
I can see myself playing with Big Bands in my future or choosing the other fork in the road and becoming an engineer or a fighter jet pilot. As a musician a huge goal I want to set myself up for is playing for Gordon Goodwin’s Big Fat Band or The Count Basie Orchestra.

Some of my favorite jazz artists include Gordon Goodwin’s Big Fat Band, Ronnie Cuber, Charlie Parker, Sam Greenfield, Stan Kenton, Chick Corea, Cory Wong, Leo P, Marshall Gilkes, and Charles Mingus.
